Paljakka has hiking and walking routes for all tastes. At Paljakka, there are routes of different lengths and difficulty. It is easy and safe to walk along the well-guided, shorter routes nearby.

At Paljakka, there are routes of different lengths (starting from 1 km) and difficulty (from easy to more challenging), which are easily accessible. Our most popular longer routes are Kalastuspolku – the Fishing Path (6 km), Maisemareitti – Scenic hiking route (10 km), Ilveskierros – Lynx tour (14 km) just by the strict nature reserve, Paljakan polku (20 km), and the choice for seasoned rangers, the Köngäskierros hike (60 km). Hiking trails start from the heart of the resort, no transportation is needed.

Nature Protection in Paljakka
Finland has a long tradition of maintaining nature’s biodiversity through designating areas, nature reserves and strict nature reserves for protection. Paljakka holiday resort offers two protected areas for nature lovers to visit, Paljakka Nature Strict Reserve and Hepoköngäs Nature Reserve with one of the Finland’s highest natural waterfalls.
Paljakka Strict Nature Reserve
The Paljakka Strict Nature Reserve is the only area in the Arctic Lakeland (even the only one in Southern Lapland) where there are still large areas of untouched forest. The Finnish Strict Nature Reserves were established to protect and explore nature. Therefore most of these reserves – unlike national parks – are not open to the public. The Paljakka Strict Nature Reserve is an absolute exception! Feel welcome to visit this unique reserve and get to know the untouched Finnish nature!
Hepoköngäs Nature Reserve
The Hepoköngäs Nature Reserve was built around one of Finland’s highest waterfalls. The Hepoköngäs waterfall of the same name is a popular destination for excursions with its 24 m drop. The waterfall is most impressive in spring and early summer, when the melt water makes the river swell. The thunder of the waterfall can be heard several hundred meters away. A well-developed, 600 m long footpath leads from a parking lot to the waterfall and offers several viewing platforms. The path is accessible to wheelchair users and is even kept clear of snow in winter.
