Finland has a very low number of waterfalls. Hepoköngäs is one of the highest natural waterfalls in Finland with a drop of 24 meters. The Hepoköngäs waterfall surrounded by the beautiful Arctic Lakeland Kainuu landscape is a popular destination.

You are invited to join our guided excursion to Hepoköngäs waterfall and Hepoköngäs geo trail. During the tour we will enjoy the Finnish-style coffee (“nokipannukahvit”) with a snack over the campfire in a barbeque hut.

The Hepoköngäs waterfall is 24 meters high. It is most beautiful in spring and early summer when the melting waters swell the river, but is worth visiting all summer. Then the thunder of the waterfall can then be heard within a couple of hundred meters.

The falls have viewing platforms, which are also accessible by wheelchair. The parking area is 300 meters from the upper level of the waterfall and 640 meters from the lower

The river valley is lush and the gorge is rugged. Half of the protected area is an old spruce forest with a number of endangered and rare species. There is also a 1.5 km geological nature trail. While walking the trail with your guide, you will be introduced to the geology, history and typical vegetation of the area.

Driving instructions

• Google maps / navigator: ”Hepoköngäs, Heinijoentie 23, 89200 Puolanka)
• From the direction of Puolanka, take the main road (No. 78, Paltamontie) five kilometers south-east of Puolanka, turn left (road 891, Hyrynsalmentie, before the intersection you see a brown road sign “Hepoköngäs”) and drive for seven kilometers. Turn right following the signs (road no. 8912, Hepokönkääntie) and drive to the end of the road. It is two kilometers from the road to the area, and there is a parking lot at the end of the road.
